All About Quadcopters
Ever since quadcopters first came out I have been in love. It began as a way to escape boredom and has since developed into my biggest hobby. There are all kinds of drones – those with cameras, small ones, large ones, waterproof quads, expensive, inexpensive. There’s even tricopters and helicopters if you’re more interested in flying one of those. It really all comes down to personal preference. Here, though, I will review some of the best quadcopters and then maybe you’ll decide what’s best for you. I’ll start with beginner drones and work my way up to advanced.
Husban x4 H107
The Husban x4 H107 comes equipped with everything a beginner quad enthusiast needs: a camera, a 2.4 GHz radio, a 3.7 V 240 rechargeable mAh battery and most importantly a cheap price tag of just $50.00. There is no set-up time with this drone considering it comes 100% ready right out of the box. After fully charging the battery for about half an hour you should get up to 9 minutes of flying time which is slightly impressive, especially for the small size. It comes in a few different colors and styles and I must say this drone is extremely easy to fly.
If you want a smaller quadcopter and you’re relatively new at flying drones then the Traxxas QR-1 is perfect for you. It’s almost twice as expensive as the Husban x4 but still manageable at $90.00. This copter is good for flying indoors or outside; just be sure to check that there’s little wind as this quad is only 1.5 pounds and could easily get carried away. You can choose from blue, green, red or orange. There are also two LED lights for night time flying. Another thing that makes this quad cool is that it’s good for tricks so once you start getting better you can do barrel rolls, flips and any other crazy thing you can think of.
This is one of my personal favorites and one of the best quadcopters out there today; I would recommend it to any beginner quad enthusiast. It comes in 3 unique styles and is very cheap at only $30.00. Don’t let the price tag fool you, trust me, you get more than what you are paying for. The Syma X1 gives you the freedom to go in any direction you please with its full 3D flight. On top of that, it comes with a 3-axis flight control system making this bad boy extremely stable.
If you enjoy performing tricks this is the drone for you. The Sky Viper can do any flip, roll, or turn with ease; you simply push a button on the receiver and it will instantly perform these tricks. At 16” diagonal, this is definitely not a small quad. It comes equipped with a 2.4 GHz remote with a rechargeable battery and AC adapter. Also, you can choose from three difficulty modes, beginner to advanced. At just $50.00 this is a great buy.
Parrot A.R. Drone
Crashing your drone is always a scary thought but with the Parrot A.R. Drone you won’t have to be as worried if a crash does occur. The body is made out of foam which protects the more expensive parts of the quadcopter. On top of that, its design is incredibly sturdy. Unfortunately, this drone is a bit pricier at $300.00 and you must control the copter either via ios or an android smart phone. If you’re willing to spend the money this is a great buy that will last.
Blade 350 QX
A great thing about this quad is that it comes 100% ready to fly out of the box. That means you don’t have to waste any of your time trying to put this drone together, just charge it and you’re ready to go. The Blade 350 QX SAFE technology provides three flight modes from beginner to advanced. Thankfully, this quad gets up to 12 minutes of flight time when fully charged. My favorite thing about this drone is its return home function that automatically lands the quad at your chosen home location. If you’re interested in having a camera on your copter, the 350 QX comes ready to attach a GoPro camera. Of course, all of these great features come at a hefty price tag of $470.00.
The main reason I put this drone under advanced instead of intermediates is simply because of its price. You need to be sure you know how to control a drone before you buy this quad, mainly due to the fact if you crash and destroy your copter that’s $500.00 down the drain. Just like the 350 QX, this quad comes ready to fly. Amazingly, the Phantom’s top speed is 22 mph! Again, like the Blade 350, the Phantom comes ready to mount a GoPro. If you really want to get fancy, you can purchase the DJI Phantom 2 Vision which comes equipped with a camera and with many extra features at a whopping price tag of $1,000.
